The 2010s have divided the hip-hop landscape into three nations: you have the artists that lean on the more traditional roots of soulful samples and pocket drumming; you have artists that favor beats full of seismic 808s, heavy synthesizers, and breakneck hi-hat sprays; and you have the artists forged from the internet, eschewing all prior structures for experimental digressions. While the overlapping portion of these three spheres is a narrow window, there are a few artists out there possessing such panoptic powers, and few are ascending in talent and plaudit quicker than West Orange, New Jersey’s Angelo Mota. A boundless potpourri of gifts, over the course of the past two years, Mota has transformed from a hopeful emcee to a demanded producer and an album-of-the-year artist. Dropping in late October of 2016, House of Diamonds marks the 21- year-old’s breakthrough moment. An album that brazenly tackles depression in the hope that it brings light to the like-minded, Mota describes “House of Diamonds” as the existence of an impenetrable yet transparent thing. Those in the house can't leave and nobody can enter, but those on the outside are given a look at what's inside through the skewered perception of the reflection of the diamond, and vice versa. Produced almost entirely by Mota himself, each track is built from different influences and ideas without sparing cohesion, like the chapters of a novel. From the piano player gospel of “Oath” to the languid soul of “Eve” and the club-ready bounce of “Internet,” Mota’s immediate dexterity in numerous styles is matched by a deluge of flow patterns — as Mass Appeal notes, he’s who bloggers are talking about when they claim a rapper’s “flow variety is diverse.” Toying comfortably between rapping, singing, and the spaces in-between, the music created by Mota is a movement of precise chaos that enraptures listeners by positioning them on the border between familiarity of mind and unpredictability of experience. Mota explains it best himself: “I got really influenced by the fact that no matter how often the sun comes up and sets every day, the middle parts are always different. It challenged me to make music for the middle parts.” Entering 2018 hot on critics’ radar, Mota, evolving faster than ever, is poised for his most prolific year yet. Between a swelling list of formidable collaborations and a new project on the horizon, Mota will soon become a household name when all is said and done.
