About The Aliens
Armed with a bottomless bag of psychedelically inclined rock and acid dipped electronics, The Aliens bring a freedom of spirit and a certainty of intent that immediately sets them out from the current crop of guitar slingers. These Aliens have history - between them they have been behind some of the most enthralling British music of the last decade. John Maclean and Robin Jones were members of the Beta Band. Gordon Anderson was a founding Beta Band member who went on to record two albums under the Lone Pigeon moniker. Their debut album Astronomy For Dogs is a great-sounding record. It’s epic, it’s pop, it's dirty, it's touching. It is a rich and vibrant carpet ride that crosses almost every musical genre one can imagine, woven from the threads of Gordon’s genuine heartfelt songs and created on a loom of laser-light fibre-optics. Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen...to the future. This cosmically ambitious record begins with a wallop, with the rocketing pace of Setting Sun, the space-scraping anthem. It then fires straight into Robot Man, which is surely the superfunk jazzerama sound of Sly Stone meeting David Elsewhere. This tune first appeared on The Aliens debut release, Alienoid Starmonica, an EP that was as intense as it was fleet-footed. Heavy-duty pop made for spinning on weapons-grade vinyl. Astronomy For Dogs doesn’t let up. Thrill to the garage rock – imagine The Velvet Underground gone Punk – of Only Waiting. Jump around to the Merseybeat charm of Glover. Wonder why The Aliens’ record company didn’t suggest they offer the intricate, aching pastoral lament She Don’t Love Me No More to Rod Stewart? – then, seconds later, as the trumpets and pedal steel hove gently into view, be thankful they didn’t. Only The Aliens could do justice to this golden ballad. And on it goes, this album that’s set its controls for the heart of the sun, and for the sunny side of your heart (and sometimes the rainy side, too). The Aliens songs start with Anderson. He brings his crackly acoustic guitar and vocal demos to Maclean and Jones, and together the three of them crank up their computers and record collections and work out what breaks, beats, samples and ideas will work best to (techni) colour in those song sketches. Helpfully, Anderson’s root songs are robustly tuneful. When you’ve been on the tumultuous mental, emotional and geographical trip The Aliens have - that can only make for a rich, cosmoscopic, senses-scrambling pop odyssey. That’s Astronomy For Dogs. After an epic ‘07 & unmissable live shows showcasing the band's infectious energy and their frontman's magnetism they finished the year with an amazing trip to the Congo with Africa Express & Damon Albarn. They have finished recording and mixing their second album "Luna", due for release on 29th September 2008 on their own label Pet Rock Records. The album will be preceded by the single "Magic Man" on September 15th. Watch the skies…. www.myspace.com/thealiens1 www.thealiens.co.uk
