Butter is a working class pop trio hailing from Portland, OR. Blending the danceable energy of neo disco, the storytelling songwriting of indie rock, and the infectious production of modern hip hop, Butter creates a sound and style entirely of their own. Aaron Schmidt layers synthesized guitar and vocals dripped in auto-tune over Jarrett Tracy’s and Thomas Shipley’s rhythm section, where effected octave bass and sampled 808 drums are used to build tight, unmistakeable grooves. Butter’s new EP “Nicotine” is both a distillation and an expansion of these elements. Throughout the five songs, complex arrangements and glittery production are combined with lyrical themes of addiction, depression, and finding confidence. Recorded by Jessica Boudreaux and Cassi Blum (Summer Cannibals) and mixed by Cameron Spies (Radiation City, Aan), “Nicotine” was made with the most unique rock and pop musicians in the Portland scene. Since their inception, the trio has booked countless DIY tours and travelled thousands of miles to build dedicated fan bases from San Francisco and Los Angeles to the tiny ski town of Ketchum, ID. They also share their immense live energy with other Portland artists, performing as the backing band for hip-hop emcee and producer Mal London and releasing collaborations with indie-pop acts DoublePlusGood and Arlo Indigo.
