The Brother Moves On (TBMO) is a Johannesburg-born South African performance art ensemble that has spent more than a decade challenging the boundaries between music, theatre, visual art and storytelling. Founded in 2009 by the late multidisciplinary artist Nkululeko Mthembu and his brother, vocalist and performance artist Siyabonga Mthembu, the collective emerged from Johannesburg’s independent art scene with a commitment to collaboration, experimentation and the continual reinvention of artistic practice. Over the years, TBMO has developed a distinctive international profile, performing at festivals and cultural platforms across Africa and Europe. Highlights include appearances at the Barbican in London, Brussels and Berlin Jazz Festivals, Bushfire Festival in Eswatini, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Their recorded work includes ETA(Independently released) A New Myth(Independently released), The Golden Wake(Independently released, Black Tax 1: Shiyanomayini(Independently released) and Tolika Mtoliki(Matsuli Music), She Who Feeds You(Native Rebels Recordings), and featured on the Indaba Is compilation(Brownswood Recordings) which was curated by the bands vocalist Siyabonga Mthembu alongside Thandi Ntuli.TBMO now enters a new chapter with Flora, Fauna and Fucking, an ambitious album trilogy that extends its longstanding interest in transformation, mythology and collective expression. The first instalment, Flora, also known as Amablom, is planned for release in March 2027 on Voom Voom Records. The project signals a continuation of the ensemble’s commitment to creating work that resists easy categorisation while remaining deeply rooted in Johannesburg and the wider cultural landscape of South Africa. More than a musical group, The Brother Moves On is an ongoing artistic proposition: a space in which sound, image, movement and narrative converge, where the past is summoned to question the present, and where the act of moving on becomes an invitation to imagine what comes next.
