About Captain Jack
Captain Jack is one of the most iconic pop acts worldwide, founded in 1995 by German music producer Udo Niebergall. The signature red hat and uniform became unmistakable trademarks. With 19 gold and platinum awards, 40 million physical records sold (singles, albums, compilations), and over 500 million streams and downloads on platforms like YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music, along with global hits like "Drill Instructor," "Soldier Soldier," and "Captain Jack", the numbers speak for themselves.
1995 marked the birth of Captain Jack. Originally conceived as a studio-only project, Udo Niebergall began working on the track “Captain Jack” in his recording studio, inviting several vocalists to take part. The Cologne-based record label EMI Electrola recognized the song’s potential and commissioned a spectacular video for the time. With provocatively dressed female soldiers and a commanding Captain wearing his iconic red hat as a drill instructor, the video quickly gained cult status among fans and major music networks like VIVA and MTV. The message was clear: “Dance instead of fight.” Instead of weapons, water pump guns were used, and the stylized fantasy uniform featured carnival medals rather than military honors.
The debut single "Captain Jack" made a powerful entrance, achieving gold and platinum status across Europe and spending 23 weeks in Germany’s Top 100 singles chart. The success was followed by prestigious awards like the VIVA Comet (1996), RSH Gold (1997), and three ECHO award nominations in Germany. The gold-certified debut album “The Mission” even conquered the Asian market in 1996. Rapper and frontman Franky Gee, along with singer Liza da Costa, toured the globe.
In Japan, Captain Jack became a cult figure. Their songs topped radio charts, and video game giants like Konami and Nintendo integrated Captain Jack tracks into the hit rhythm game Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), later released for PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii. During a promo tour, Captain Jack even entered the wrestling ring against Japan’s top wrestler, Hiromichi Fuyuki. The dramatic fight aired live on Japanese TV.
Through the late '90s and early 2000s, Captain Jack continued to see chart success. The secret sauce was cover versions of ’70s and ’80s hits, produced in the unmistakable Captain Jack style with commanding choral hooks. In 1999 the song "Get Up!“ - a collaboration with the legendary Gipsy Kings - reached number 23 in the german TOP 100 charts. That same year, Captain Jack appeared on the popular German TV show Wetten, dass..? performing in Mallorca’s old bullring alongside stars like the Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Lou Bega, and Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls.
The group frequently rotated its female vocalists to bring new energy to the act. Liza da Costa fronted the first two years and recorded the successful albums “The Mission” and “Operation Dance.” She was followed by singers such as Maloy, Sunny, Illi Love, Laura Martin (a Voice of Germany contestant) and Michelle Stanley.
On October 22, 2005, Franky Gee passed away unexpectedly in Mallorca due to a brain hemorrhage likely caused by long-term complications from diabetes. At first, producer and manager Udo Niebergall had no plans to continue the project.
However, overwhelming fan letters from around the world led to a large-scale singer casting in 2006. The winner was clear: Bruce Lacy, son of U.S. saxophonist Freeman Lacy from The Drifters. He stepped into Franky Gee’s role and has led the project to continued success. Bruce embodies the role of the party captain in a truly unique way. With Bruce Lacy at the helm, Captain Jack has become one of the most in-demand '90s acts on the global stage.
