About Dumbsaint
Dumbsaint is a filmmaking instrumental rock band from Sydney, Australia that combines cinematic music
with original, synced, narrative film projections to create a powerful and unusual audiovisual experience.
The group is made up by Nick Andrews (Drums), Brendan Sloan (Guitar), James Thomas (Bass) and Mike
Tokar (Guitar).
Unlike other music artists that use video projections as a backdrop to their live performances, one of the
aims of Dumbsaint is to blur the boundaries between the different art forms, and to use the live music
stage to explore dynamic and sometimes surprising interactions between sound and image. Featuring
film work that is written, shot and edited entirely by the band itself, Dumbsaint creates a live
performance in which each song is a short film and each screening a musical set piece.
Distributed by Sydney-based independent record label Bird’s Robe Records, Dumbsaint has released two
studio-recorded full-length albums, one studio-recorded single, a trilogy of independently-recorded EPs
and three DVDs since forming as a band in 2009.
In addition to several headlining performances across numerous national tours, Dumbsaint has played as
the main support act to many notable Australian and international bands, including Katatonia, Russian
Circles, The Contortionist, Earth, Twelve Foot Ninja, Boris, sleepmakeswaves, Rosetta, Grails and This
Will Destroy You. The band was also invited to perform at Brisbane’s high-profile BIGSOUND Live 2015
Festival and Music Conference.
Dumbsaint’s debut album Something That You Feel Will Find Its Own Form (2012) and later single The
Auteur (2013) were both recorded and mixed at Sydney’s famed Studios 301 with producer Tim Carr (We
Lost The Sea, Matt Corby). The album received critical praise, including glowing reviews from Music
Feeds, The AU Review, Metal Obsession and more, leading to both local and international airplay,
including spins on Triple J, Sydney’s FBi and KOOP in Austin, Texas, among others.
Dumbsaint’s second full-length album, Panorama, in ten pieces. (2015), was recorded, mixed and
produced by award-winning record producer Dax Liniere (Meniscus, sleepmakeswaves) and was released
collaboratively through Art As Catharsis and Bird’s Robe Records. A critical hit, the band’s sophomore
effort was named ‘Indie Album Of The Week’ by Australian music bible The Brag and received strong
praise from HEAVY Magazine, Metal Injection, Arctic Drones and Heavy Blog Is Heavy, leading to
extensive radio airplay across Australia.
In early 2016, Panorama… was longlisted for the prestigious 2015 Australian Music Prize, with judges
hailing the LP as one of the best Australian albums of the year. The album’s two singles, ‘Cold Call’ and
‘Communion’, also premiered exclusively on Triple J and theMusic.com.au, with their corresponding short
films screening on ABC TV's music program Rage.
Later in 2016, after 18 months of filming and editing, the album’s corresponding feature film was
released online through Vimeo On Demand. Designed to play in sync with Panorama… from beginning to
end, the film marks Dumbsaint’s most ambitious fusion of music and cinema to date.
Following the film’s release, Dumbsaint took the full presentation on the road for a series of special live
performances across Australia, showcasing the entire feature film and album in one sitting. These unique
theatrical events were met with great success, with Dumbsaint continuing to creatively blur the line
between a typical rock gig and an intimate night at the movies.
