About The Dogs D'Amour
The music of the Dogs D'Amour can be described as a mixture of The Rolling Stones and Faces style roots rock and Hanoi Rocks style glam punk. Unlike popular bands of the time, who had misogynistic themes, the Dogs D'Amour relies more on romantic themes and poetic style lyrics. Tyla was also a huge fan of Charles Bukowski, and many of his lyrics, delivered with an impelling throaty rasp, were tinged with humorous irony and pathos, reflecting Bukowski's prosaic style. The Dogs' sound was firmly rooted in American blues music, and Jo Almeida's unique and distinctive slide guitar was reminiscent of blues masters like Lightnin' Hopkins and Charley Patton. The Dogs began to show a strong country & western side on 1989's Errol Flynn (released as King Of The Thieves in the United States), a few years before alt-country became in vogue. The band originally featured Ned Christie on vocals, Tyla and Nick Halls on lead and rhythm guitar respectively, Karl Watson on bass, and Bam on drums. Tyla took over lead vocals when singer Ned Christie left early on. The most succesful incarnation of The Dogs included Tyla (vox & guitar), Bam (drums), Steve James (bass) and Jo Dog (guitar). They recorded the classic albums "The Dynamite Jet Saloon", "A Graveyard of Empty Bottles" and "Errol Flynn/King of the Thieves". The Dogs D'Amour split in 1990 before reforming in 1993 with a new guitarist, Darrell Bath replacing glory days guitarist Jo Dog. This line up split up again, which allowed for each member to pursue various projects. Tyla released some solo material while drummer Bam went on to preform with The Wildhearts and later Bubble. In 2001 another reunion took place featuring Tyla, Jo Dog, Bam and beau Share Pedersen (formerly of Vixen and currently in Bubble). After one album and a tour all members but Tyla left the band.
