About Elena Siegman
If you search the name “Elena Siegman” online you’ll quickly learn two things. One, Elena is beloved by fans around the world as the vocalist for a slew of zombie metal songs prominently featured in the popular video game series, Call of Duty. Two, she is a pioneer in the video game world as a producer and high-ranking executive in a male-dominated industry. The one thing you have to dig a little deeper to find is Elena the solo artist. That’s about to change. The singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and gaming vet is now turning her full attention to her music career. Previously, she released the alt-country EP, The Mighty. Up next, Elena is releasing an album of imaginative renditions of her favorite songs aptly-titled, Cover Me. “Every time someone has asked me what kind of music I play, I die inside,” the Seattle-based artist says with a good-natured laugh. “In those instances, I wish I could just make them a mix tape. I thought that kind of curation would be a good way to restart my solo career.” Elena may be best known for the track “115” on Call Of Duty: Black Ops. Zombie mode. It’s a hugely popular track around the world with numerous fan reaction videos—even Bullet for my Valentine’s lead singer Matt Tuck gushed about it in taste-making metal monthly Kerrang. With her Boston-based all-girl punk band Vagiant, Elena also appeared in Guitar Hero II and Rock Band. Elena is one of a rarefied few entertainment business people that have had credible success onstage and off. As a gaming executive and producer, she was there on the ground floor of the modern gaming explosion of the early 2000s. Elena has worked in pivotal roles with such gaming franchises Harmonix Music Systems, Firewalk Studios, Destiny, Bungie, and Cold Iron Studios, among others. Elena was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, a child of divorce, living until highschool with her single mom. “I have a lot of admiration for her. She instilled the value in me that if someone says you can’t do something, you should run toward that,” Elena says. Another key female role model was Delores Rhoads, mother of the deceased metal guitar hero, Randy Rhoads. Elena studied classical piano under the strict tutelage of Delores at her esteemed Musonia School of Music. Elena can remember always loving singing, and has fond memories of belting out “O Canada” at the top of her lungs in grocery store aisles while shopping with her hockey loving father. Parallel to performing music, she also fell in love with video games. “I love art forms that have a community aspect, like gaming and music—they’ve always seemed warmly inviting,” Elena says. When she got older, Elena gigged around the LA area before she moved to Boston to accept a dream job at Harmonix, the video gaming media powerhouse best known for developing Dance Central, Rock Band, and Guitar Hero. “I finally got to a place where both parts of my personality existed in the same place,” Elena shares. During this time, Elena began featuring in video game music, eventually guesting on 14 zombie metal songs. “I love metal—Iron Maiden is in my Top 10—but I had to find my way with the music. So, I just went over the top with it and had fun, and that seemed to resonate with people,” she recalls. Elena shared more personally on her debut solo EP, The Mighty, an elegantly-produced emotionally-raw collection delicately textured with dreamy harmony vocals, back porch acoustic guitars, and lonesome pedal steel. Throughout, Elena’s smoky and sensually expressive vocals and her poetically reflective lyrics shine beautifully. The Mighty foreshadows her upcoming debut album with an imaginative country version of Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades.” Cover Me is named after the Springsteen Born In The U.S.A. track “Cover Me.” It offers a carefully-curated but wildly-eclectic mix tape experience, spanning songs from 1990s alt-rock, 1960s soul, classic rock, punk, proto-metal, 1970s glam, 1970s Laurel Canyon folk, and alt-country all reimagined with Elena’s singular musicality. “I’m approaching this covers album by trying to make my versions of these songs from the perspective of how the originals made me feel,” Elena says. Teenage Fanclub’s scrappy alt-rock classic, “The Concept,” appears as a shimmering indie-folk track. Irma Thomas’s R&B number, “Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand),” is reframed as a psychotic rock song. And Bad Religion’s pummeling punk anthem, “The Handshake,” is reconfigured as an introspective ballad. It’s been a long time coming, but today Elena is embracing an artistic rebirth through dedicating herself to her music career. Elena says: “I’ve realized it’s time for me to give myself the help I give to others to realize their artistic visions—I finally made the decision to just do it.”
