About Garth Stevenson
Double bassist and composer Garth Stevenson was raised in the mountains of Western Canada, where nature became his primary inspiration and the common thread between his life and music. His three solo albums—Alpine, Flying, and Voyage—reflect his experiences carrying his 150-year-old double bass to remote locations, such as the woods, beach, desert, Antarctica, and Tuva. iTunes praises Flying: "Garth Stevenson joins the likes of Brian Eno and Sigur Rós as a practitioner of this ethereal yet accessible genre… 'The Southern Sea' offers the aural equivalent of effortlessly swimming underwater without ever needing to come up for air." During Stevenson’s month-long journey to Antarctica in 2010 aboard the icebreaker Ushuaia, he was joined by author Cormac McCarthy, actress Juliette Binoche, and artists Todd Murphy and Gregory Colbert. Stevenson played his double bass among seals, penguins, and icebergs. He composed the score and acted in Scott Cohen’s feature film Red Knot, which starred Vincent Kartheiser and Olivia Thirlby. Renowned whale researcher Roger Payne, the first to record humpback whales in the 1960s, was also on board. Before the trip, Stevenson spent a few weeks learning to adapt whale calls on his bass by playing along with Payne’s album Songs Of The Humpback Whale. One evening, during a four-day crossing between South Georgia and Antarctica, he gave a concert at sunset on the ship’s bow. He improvised, created layers with his loop pedal, and imitated whale calls on the bass. Minutes later, twelve sei whales swam alongside the vessel. Stevenson's connection to whales and conservation has lasted over the years. In 2025, he traveled to Baja, Mexico, to play bass for humpback whales. Standing on a small fishing boat, he connected his bass to an underwater speaker and used hydrophones to record the sounds of whales. This created an environment where he could hear the whales and they could hear his music, opening up the possibility of a true call-and-response. These interactions were documented by National Geographic director Andy Mann, videographer Maru Brito, and cinematographer Alonso Rodriguez, with additional footage by Sea Legacy. Created in collaboration with the Fomares Conservation Group, the film aims to build support for the establishment of a large Marine Protected Area to safeguard the ecosystem from deep-sea mining and industrial fishing. The film, which premiered in Mexico City in May, is on display at the Museum of Natural History in Mexico City and will screen at the Los Cabos Film Festival in December. In 2015, he performed at the World Science Festival at the Museum of Natural History in New York for a special program on Arctic whales. In May 2019, Stevenson performed and joined the Ocean Plastics Leadership Summit on board the RCGS Resolute, departing from Bermuda into the North Atlantic plastic gyre. The summit brought together environmental groups, including Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund, as well as companies such as Dow Chemical, Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, and Nestlé, to address ocean plastic pollution. Later that September, Stevenson played for sperm and pilot whales off the coast of North Carolina, joining University of North Carolina scientists to record and monitor whales with hydrophones. Stevenson played for injured sea turtles at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. As a film composer, Garth most recently worked on the original scores to Bob Marley: One Love and VAL, a documentary about Val Kilmer. Stevenson has collaborated twice with director John Curran, best known for The Painted Veil. Their first project was the 2013 dramatic biography Tracks, starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. They followed with the 2017 biographical drama Chappaquiddick, which featured Kate Mara and Jason Clarke. Garth also composed the score for the snake thriller Them That Follow, starring Olivia Coleman, Walton Goggins, Kaitlyn Dever, and Alice Englert. The film premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. In 2014, Stevenson composed the score to the Antarctic-set drama Red Knot, in which he also had a part. Other notable projects include the 2015 drama 10,000 Saintswith Hailee Steinfeld and Ethan Hawke, as well as the biographical drama The Grizzlies. He also composed music for documentaries, including Young Lakota, Forget Me Not, Seed: The Untold Story, Conscious Point, Relative, andResilience, which premiered at Sundance in 2016. Stevenson has collaborated with director Andrew Kightlinger three times. Together, they worked on Lost On A Mountain in Maine, Tater Tot & Patton (starring Jessica Rothe and Bates Wilder), and Okay. He composed the political documentary series Unbreaking America for Represent Us, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Douglas, and Ed Helms. Stevenson composed the original score for Echoes in the Arctic for Sea Legacy. In addition to his recording and composing, Garth Stevenson has led Music Meditation Hikes for ten years. With his double bass on his back, he guides groups to beautiful natural locations, improvising music that blends with the environment. Stevenson introduced his music to the yoga community at the Wanderlust Festival in 2009. There, he improvised during classes and led large groups of hikers into the mountains to perform his solo music. He performed at the world’s largest yoga class in Central Park for 13,000 people. He also performed at France’s largest yoga gathering, in front of the Eiffel Tower, for over 3,000 people. In 2008, Stevenson was awarded first prize in the International Society of Bassists composition competition for his innovative piece, “Grandfather: for double bass and electronics.” He subsequently served as a judge for the competition in 2010. Stevenson is a four-time grant recipient from the Canada Council for the Arts. He is a founding member of 5707, the ambient duo with guitarist Ryan Ferreira, and TAQ, a Warsaw-based trio with pianist Marcin Masecki and drummer Ziv Ravitz. He is well-known in the New York improvised and experimental music scene. He has collaborated with Mat Maneri, Craig Taborn, Ornette Coleman, David Tronzo, and John Shannon. He has also toured with Petr Cancura’s Down Home band. In July 2012, he traveled to Tuva, a province on the border of Mongolia, for an artist residency. There, he performed and collaborated with world-renowned throat singers, including Alash Ensemble, Huun-Huur Tu, Kongar-ool Ondar, Andre Mongush, and the Tuvan National Orchestra. As a freelance bassist, he has recorded on over 50 albums. Stevenson attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, earning a degree in Performance and Jazz Composition. He has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and at festivals across Europe, Japan, Russia, Canada, South America, and Bonnaroo.
