About Jeangu Macrooy
Jeangu Macrooy's musical journey (Paramaribo, 1993) begins when he receives a guitar from his parents at the age of thirteen and forms a musical duo with his twin brother Xillan. However, Jeangu's musical ambitions are significant, so he moves from Suriname to the Netherlands in 2014. There, he meets producer/composer Perquisite, who signs him to his label Unexpected Records and supports him as a music producer and manager. From the release of his debut EP Brave Enough (2016), Jeangu strides through the Dutch music scene with seven-league boots: he becomes a 3FM Talent, participates in the Popronde, performs as opening acts for artists like Blaudzun and Selah Sue, appears frequently on De Wereld Draait Door, performs at Noorderslag, and is nominated for the Edison Pop Award for Best Newcomer. Jeangu's soulful debut album High On You (2017) is nominated for an Edison Pop Award in the Best Album category and takes Jeangu and his band to festivals like Lowlands and North Sea Jazz. This is followed by a homecoming show in Suriname, where his single High On You has already been at number one in the charts for seven weeks. Back in the Netherlands, more than three million people see him shine in The Passion, and he opens for Curtis Harding and Ayo on their German tours. On his second album Horizon (2019), Jeangu showcases more diversity. He has become a confident artist, driven by curiosity and zest for life, exploring the world. The album presentation takes place in a sold-out Paradiso main hall, followed by a new club tour across the Netherlands. In early 2020, it is announced that Jeangu will represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest with his song Grow (2020). The Song Contest cannot take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but Jeangu's entry receives a wave of (inter)national acclaim: a premiere on national television, placements in Spotify's New Music Friday playlists in twelve countries, (cover) articles in all national newspapers, millions of streams and views, and a place in the Dutch charts. On March 4, 2021, exactly one year after the release of Grow, Birth Of A New Age (2021) is released, Jeangu's new entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The video clip, directed by Kevin Osepa and partly filmed in the Rijksmuseum, has now been viewed more than 1.5 million times, and the song is picked up by The New York Times. Jeangu Macrooy's third studio album Summer Moon (2022), which he made with producer Bud Kolk, was released on November 11, 2022. This is his most heartfelt album to date. In terms of sound, Jeangu partly returns to the soulful sound of his debut album High On You on Summer Moon, but electronic influences are also audible. The album is nominated for an Edison Award in the Soul/R&B/Funk category. In March 2023, he released the song 'Space', which was declared TopSong by NPO Radio 2. Later that year, the 'Summer Moon Tour' took place, a club tour throughout the country focused on the latest album. In late 2023, it was announced that Jeangu would portray the role of Jesus in the rock musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. The theatrical spectacle takes place from January 2024 to September 2024. On May 23, he gives an exclusive acoustic concert at The Concertgebouw. This is his only solo show of the year.
