About Juan Luis Guerra

Juan Luis Guerra (born June 7, 1957 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Dominican musician, songwriter, arranger, and producer widely regarded as the defining voice of Latin Caribbean music. He brought bachata and merengue to a global audience with a musicality the world had never heard before, transforming regional Caribbean genres into universal languages and becoming the soundtrack to a generation. His debut album Soplando (1984) introduced Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 to the world. The 1989 album Ojalá que Llueva Café launched his international breakthrough, followed by Bachata Rosa (1990), which sold over nine million copies, earned his first Grammy, and catapulted romantic bachata onto the world stage, dressing the genre in poetry for the very first time. Areíto (1992) revealed another dimension: songs like "El Costo de la Vida" brought light to the everyday struggles of Dominicans and Latin Americans with honesty and grace. La Llave de Mi Corazón (2007) added over 20 international awards to his name, including a Grammy and five Latin Grammys. The anthems speak for themselves: "Bachata Rosa," "Ojalá Que Llueva Café," "La Bilirrubina," "La Llave de Mi Corazón," "Las Avispas," "Todo Tiene Su Hora." Songs that don't age. Songs that don't leave you. A multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, Guerra was named Latin Grammy Person of the Year by the Latin Recording Academy, UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2008, and received an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music in 2009. His catalog is a body of work; his live shows, a celebration. His creative output continues to push forward. Todo Tiene Su Hora (2014) won Latin Grammy Album of the Year and sold out venues from Paris to Panama City. The Entre Mar y Palmeras concert film, directed by his son Jean Guerra for HBO Max, brought his live music to screens worldwide. Radio Güira (2023) fuses jazz, mambo, trap, merengue, pop, and big band in a single breath. In 2024 he released Capitán Avispa, an animated film inspired by his iconic merengue "Las Avispas," built around the motto "Fuerte y Valiente Nunca Miente." His most recent single, "Estrellitas y Duendes," features Sting. Off the stage, Guerra quietly funds social initiatives through his foundation in the Dominican Republic and supports the next generation of Latin musicians through music education scholarships with the Latin Grammy Foundation and Berklee College of Music, guided by the belief that there is more joy in giving than in receiving. Juan Luis Guerra is a living legend, still writing, still recording, still touring, his music played in every corner of the world. Through decades of artistic excellence, he has carried the Dominican identity to the highest stages on earth. He attributes his creative gifts to Jesus Christ. In his own words: "toda mi capacidad proviene de Él."
