Kam Franklin is an interdisciplinary artist, songwriter, vocalist, producer, and cultural connector whose work transcends genre and medium to speak to the core of our shared humanity. Though she’s perhaps most widely recognized as the powerhouse lead singer and songwriter at the helm of acclaimed Gulf Coast soul band The Suffers, Franklin has also established herself as a prolific writer, orator, model, actress, visual artist, and entrepreneur over the course of the last decade, utilizing her platform to champion more inclusive environments for Black, queer, femme, and non-binary artists around the world. Since forming The Suffers in 2011, Franklin’s collaborations have cemented her reputation as an artist’s artist, fearless cultural advocate, and invigorating creative partner. A cursory glance reveals a dizzying portfolio. She contributed her signature vocals to the 2026 Grammy-winning album A Tribute to the King of Zydeco, honoring Clifton Chenier. In 2022, she founded the Bayou City Comeback Chorus and went on to release two EPs with the group, blending psychedelic funk and traditional choral music with gutsy panache. In 2021, she joined Chaka Khan, Margo Price, Brandi Carlile, Yola, and more as part of Allison Russell’s “Once and Future Sounds” on the Newport Folk Festival mainstage. In 2018, she released a single with Grammy-winning Tejano legends La Mafia. The previous year, she sang with the Houston Symphony, and in 2016, she performed in the March for Science band alongside Jon Batiste, Stay Human, Questlove, Judith Hill, and Fred Wesley in Washington, D.C. She is also a member of Antone’s 50th Allstars, a collective celebrating the legacy of the legendary Austin, Texas blues institution. Their debut release received a 2026 Austin Music Award for Best Blues Album. The group’s forthcoming album, “Antone’s 50th Presents Chicago Bound: Honoring Muddy, Cliff & Blue,” will be released alongside Franklin’s debut solo album, Land of the Neon Sun, on August 28, 2026. Franklin’s collaborative work has connected her with some of music’s most celebrated artists, including Margo Price, Chaka Khan, Gary Clark Jr., Son Little, Bun B, Fred Wesley, Lisa E. Harris, Paul Wall, Kevin Morby, Jackie Venson, Jon Batiste, Questlove, Lake Street Dive, Allison Russell, Living Colour, Bad Brains, Fishbone, Brandi Carlile, Dispatch, Lucius, Chris Tsagakis of RX Bandits, Lurrie Bell, La Mafia, and the Houston Symphony. Her ability to move with ease between soul, Americana, blues, country, gospel, hip-hop, funk, and experimental forms has established her as a singular voice within contemporary roots music. When she’s not onstage or in the studio, Franklin is an in-demand speaker, panelist, writer, and arts advocate. She has contributed writing on race, gender, music, and culture to outlets including Forbes and Vice, appeared on Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead podcast, and spoken at museums, festivals, universities, and nonprofit organizations across the country. She has previously served on the board of directors of HeadCount, as an elected Governor for the Texas and Oklahoma Chapter of the Recording Academy, and as both the inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Ambassador and the inaugural Black Music Collective Chapter Ambassador for the Texas and Oklahoma Chapter of the Recording Academy. In August 2026, Franklin will release her debut solo album, Land of the Neon Sun. Co-executive produced by Franklin and Margo Price, with additional production from Bhi Bhiman on the take-no-nonsense anthem “We Ain’t Going,” the album features collaborations with Kevin Morby and Jackie Venson. The album was mixed by Steve Christensen (Steve Earle, Khruangbin), Jim Eno (Spoon), and John Allen Stephens (The Suffers / AJ McQueen), and mastered by Chris Longwood (Khruangbin / Parliament Funkadelic). Land of the Neon Sun is a 12-song joyride that honors Americana roots while embracing experimentation, individuality, and vulnerability. Land of the Neon Sun marks a new chapter in Franklin’s artistic evolution, reflecting her ongoing commitment to honoring musical traditions while pushing them toward new possibilities.
