Driven by a need to escape his “Norwegian self,” he traveled to Los Angeles. The result is «Love Freely» — a raw, English-language taste of an album written in an intense creative rush. For a decade, Kristian Kristensen has helped shape Norway’s pop landscape with his extraordinary vocal range and emotional power. With major hits like «Kan du lære mæ?», a Spellemann award, and sold-out shows across the country, he has cemented his position as one of Norway’s most compelling storytellers. But behind the success, a growing need for change began to take hold. A return to something organic Over five weeks in Los Angeles — and many hours spent on a balcony — Kristensen set aside big productions and found his way back to the core: an acoustic guitar. By limiting himself to a single instrument, he discovered a new kind of freedom that ultimately became a full album. Inspired by artists such as Adrianne Lenker and Bon Iver, he has embraced a close, organic sound. “Something about that limitation felt great — it was liberating. Seeing ‘Norwegian Kristian’ and his life from the outside, from the other side of the world, forced the language to take me down completely different paths. It felt like a necessary escape to see everything from a new perspective,” he says. The spark that returned It was during one of those balcony days that the riff for «Love Freely» came to life. For Kristian, the song became a turning point after a long period marked by apathy and indifference. Through writing, he realized how expectations — from society and from himself — had made it difficult to live and love authentically. “I felt a spark in my stomach that I hadn’t felt in years. I realized how heavy it’s been to never have had a partner, and that for a long time I’ve felt like I haven’t lived up to the expectations I’ve had around love. This song is about wanting to say ‘to hell with all that’ — to love on your own terms. Free of conditions.
