MNEK deconstructs, fuses and re-builds pop, R&B and dance in a way most can’t, and his songwriting, production and vocal skills are being sought out by everyone from Beyonce to Stormzy, Zara Larsson to Clean Bandit, Dua Lipa and Little Mix, from Kylie to Madonna and many many others. Not content with just creating musical mastery for other people, MNEK’s also primed to properly take over as a solo artist following last years release of “Never Forget You”, a duet with Zara Larsson which he wrote and produced. It spent 6 weeks in the UK top 10 , reached top 5 in the US Top 40 chart with platinum sales and sold over 3 million copies globally. MNEK’s latest release ‘Paradise’ takes that deep understanding of what makes a career-defining record, and combines it with a personal point of view as never before. As a kid growing up in South London’s Catford, MNEK always had an inquisitive appetite for new sounds. He loved the ‘90s R&B compilation CDs that his Dad played in the car, as well as his Mum’s favourite divas like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson — influences that are clear in his one-of-a-kind strutting beats and soulful vocals to this day. For MNEK, the past four years of focusing on songwriting and production has allowed him to go through the life experiences — including first love and first heartbreak — that every good lyricist needs to have to draw from. MNEK’s diverse music from his debut album is imbued with this confidence, with influences spanning from pop to dance, and R&B to future-soul. “I think the best way for people to understand who I am is in long-form,” he says, citing Janet Jackson’s classic The Velvet Rope as an example of impeccable sequencing. “Even when she has the up-tempo songs, there’s still a synergy through the interludes,” he says with determination. “I want to do that — I want you to appreciate my album from start to finish.” We’ll be listening.
