About Omar Hakim
From an early age, Omar Hakim’s affinity for rhythm was evident. He began playing the drums at the tender age of five and soon found himself performing in his father’s band, guided by his familial musical influence. This early exposure laid the foundation for a journey that would take him to the forefront of the music scene. Hakim’s breakout moment arrived in the 1980s when he garnered attention as the drummer and backup vocalist with Carly Simon. However, it was his association with the legendary band Weather Report in 1982 that elevated him to new heights. Embracing jazz fusion, Hakim’s dynamic drumming became an integral component of Weather Report’s sound. Over the course of three tours and contributions to three albums between 1982 and 1984, Hakim seamlessly blended his rhythmic prowess with the intricacies of jazz fusion, showcasing his extraordinary versatility. In 1983, Hakim’s presence became synonymous with David Bowie’s most commercially successful album, “Let’s Dance”, which was followed by his participation in the subsequent album, “Tonight”; in 1984. Bowie lauded Hakim’s impeccable timing and fresh approach, solidifying his reputation as a captivating and innovative drummer. Hakim’s journey continued to intertwine with some of the most iconic names in music. His involvement with Dire Straits, where he temporarily replaced the band’s drummer Terry Williams for their fifth album “Brothers in Arms”, showcased his ability to adapt and contribute to the desired sound of the album. He left an indelible mark on tracks like “Money for Nothing.” A testament to his versatility, Hakim’s talents graced diverse musical genres. He collaborated with pop sensations such as Madonna, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion, infusing his unique style into their soundscapes. He continued his exploration of electronic percussion, enhancing his role as a sought-after session musician. Hakim’s influence extended beyond his drumming skills. He released his debut album as a leader, “Rhythm Deep”, in 1989, earning a Grammy Award nomination. His subsequent albums, including “The Groovesmith” in 2000, and “We Are One” in 2014 further showcased his creative vision and musical depth. Throughout his career, Hakim’s contributions to the music industry remained undeniably prolific and his contributions and collaborations continued with artists such as Daft Punk (on their multi Grammy award winning album Random Access Memories in 2013), with Kate Bush for her critically acclaimed return to the stage at the Hammersmith in London 2014, North American and Canadian tour with the band Journey in 2015 and recording sessions as the percussionist with the Foo Fighters on their Medicine at Midnight album. In 2017, Hakim’s journey took a new turn as he assumed the role of Chairman of the Percussion Department at Berklee College of Music, a testament to his dedication to music education and mentorship. He graced the covers of prestigious publications like Modern Drummer and DrumHead, solidifying his status as a respected figure in the drumming world. His impact on the contemporary music scene persisted, with a memorable appearance at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium in 2022. Collaborating with a lineup of esteemed musicians, Hakim showcased his enduring prowess on the global stage. In September 2023 Omar was inducted into the Zildjian Cymbals company’s Hall of Fame joining a long list of legendary drummers such as Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker and Elvin Jones. 2024 marks the beginning of yet another chapter in the illustrious career of Drummer, Producer, Composer and Vocalist Omar Hakim with the launch of his new band SONIC BOOM SQUAD! SBS combines the elements of Rock, Funk and Pop, great grooves and catchy songs into some very exciting and fun music! After the release of the album he and Sonic Boom Squad will embark on a worldwide concert tour. The performances will showcase Hakim’s enduring artistry alongside accomplished musicians such as Paul Pesco on guitar, Jerry Brooks on bass, Chogyi Lama on guitar and Rachel Z Hakim on keyboards . This new project promises to further solidify Hakim’s legacy as a dynamic and innovative force in the world of music. Omar Hakim’s remarkable journey is an intricate tapestry woven with rhythms and music that transcend genres and captivate audiences. His ability to seamlessly navigate pop, rock, jazz, and fusion music coupled with his unparalleled drumming finesse, makes him a true virtuoso. As a composer, arranger, producer, and performer, he continues to inspire aspiring musicians and music enthusiasts worldwide, ensuring that his musical and rhythmic legacy will endure for generations to come!
