About Richard Thompson
“The Finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix.” — LA Times “A folksinger who (shreds) like an arena-rock star… and still writes songs that sting and storm.” – NPR Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic- from the Americanas in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards, and the prestigious Ivor Novellos. In 2011 Thompson was the recipient of the OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Most recently he was nominated for “Artist of the Year” by the Americana Music Honors & Awards. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 60’s, Richard Thompson and his mates virtually invented British Folk Rock. By the age of 21 he left the band to pursue his own career, followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist. A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s music including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, REM, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, David Byrne, Don Henley and many others. Thompson’s massive body of work includes over 40 albums, many Grammy nominations, as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man. His most recent CD, Electric, was produced by the great Nashville musician Buddy Miller (Band of Joy, Patty Griffin.). Electric continues to receive positive praise with Rolling Stone declaring, “…the excellence is undeniable.” This year saw Richard Thompson headlining dates around the world as well as co-headlining shows with Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell. Thompson and his band joined the Americanarama Tour sharing the stage with Bob Dylan, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket culminating with Dylan himself covering RT’s classic song “’1952 Vincent Black Lightning”. Thompson’s genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with dizzying energy and onstage wit continue to earn Richard Thompson massive new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos in folk rock history. “Genius appears early. Legends are earned. But history’s greatest never stand on their laurels. This is the artistic arc for Richard Thompson!” "Richard Thompson has been called the finest rock songwriter after Bob Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Jimi Hendrix." Scott Timberg, L.A. It was an excellent show. RT is a virtuoso guitarist. He sang solo for much of his 2 hour, 2 encore performance. About a quarter of his repertoire was accompanied by a female singer. The theater is beautiful with exceptional speakers. Lighting was basic , though the lighting equipment itself was also top notch. Great show altogether and we were very happy to see a performer who has been operating at this high of a level for over 54 years.

RT was in fine form, Zara Phillips stunning in a start-of-0tour premier gown, her voice was perfect, she even played a bit of guitar, as did Zack, RT's *grandson*. Well, *that's* tradition! Amazing bass, how sweet the sound. Oh, and my favorite drummer, Dave Mattacks. Great stuff.
My only two questions: was that a Rickenbacker 12-string RT was playing on that Byrds-like song? And what was that song? It was great...they could do a Byrds cover album!

Excellent show with a mixture of old and new tunes with some surprising choices from the RT repertoire. Particularly liked the cover version of The Byrds' Bells of Rhymney and The Band's The Weight. His grandson on rhythm guitar was impressive too. A solid 2 hour set with RT's eclectic humour punctuating the proceedings. A totally enjoyable concert for both the old hardcore RT fan and for more recent ones.

Sir Richard was under the weather. Poor guy battled a cough and kept on going. He threatened about ending up doing Coen songs, and threw in an excellent cover of “Famous Blue Raincoat.” Bucket list moment for myself, listening to him play “1952 Vincent Black Lightening.” He is definitely in the top list of greatest guitarist of all time. If you have never seen him play live, I would highly recommend it.

Maybe it's a function of "the most recent experience is the best experience", but this electric show from RT was as good or better than any show I've ever seen.
RT was incredible! 69y/o and rocking the joint hard for over two hours. His bassist and drummer were so good-esp'ly the drummer, Michael Jerome. His Acoustic guitar playing, e.g., on"1952 Vincent Black Lightning", was also sublime-as always.
