About Subculture
It all started in 1991 when Azreen and his cousin Azwan decided to form a band which was later joined by Izmir and Sani. The jigsaw was completed & it comprised of Azreen (Vocal, Rythem), Azwan (Lead, Guitar), Izmir (Bass) & Sani (Drums). The band received a major breakthrough in 1993 when they were offered to cut a single entitled “GT63” for the 1st Malaysian Alternative Music Compilation along with other local alternative acts such as Spiral Kinetik Circus, Flop Poppy, ART , Soulwound and few others. This compilation also saw the band making its debut into studio works. Subculture then was making a steady progress into the alternative music scene. The first performance of the band was at a gig entitled “Revenge of The Rats” at Life Center, KL. A few months later, a demo tape entitled “Color” was released & distributed to friends, fans & fanzines. As a result, the band enjoyed flows of gigs throughout the country. Once, they performed 3 cities within 2 days; all in the name of music they love. Subculture’s progress was spotted by an independent label SZS Production & later in mid 1994, “Love & Hate” – a catchy melodious punk rock & roll album was released. Despite minimal press coverage & limited radio airplay, the album defied the odds by selling more than 50,000 units. Thus, the band had sold-out shows allover Malaysia. Subculture recorded their 2nd album entitled Time Knock which was released in 1997. This album was a new direction for the band as they started to add elements of surf music into their rock & roll root. The song Turning Around from the album saw the band’s first music video being released and hit the local TV stations. The band continued to enjoy consistent airplays mainly from the local English-medium radio stations. The band started to slow down due to work commitments and families matters. Fao & Shahrin joined the band in late 1997 & 2001 respectively. The 3rd album “Retrofungus” was released in 2002 with the same punk rock & roll vibe which has become their trademark. The album continued to expand the band’s legacy and fan base. “The Best of Subculture” compilation which was released in 2006 marked another milestone for the band. There was no other local punk rock band in Malaysia that had their “The best of” released. Despite taking it a little slow, the band continued to perform at local shows and gigs where they maintained their relationship with their avid fans and at the same time making new ones. In November 2009, the band was invited to open for the legendary punk band, Buzzcocks. This was also a crucial turning point for the band when they decided to make a serious comeback into the music scene. The band was made stronger with their latest member, Nizam, on guitars. 2010 was a new era for the band. They were hungrier and more pumped-up to take the alternative music scene by storm. Their new single entitled “Ticket to the Moon” was released in April 2010 and quickly got airplays in local radio stations. The band then decided to do something that they had never thought of doing – recording a Malay number. As a result, “Dilemma” was released to the masses in August 2010 and it ploughed local radio stations by storm. The song was also nominated for TV3’s infamous Muzik-Muzik and stayed in the chart for two months. 2011 is an all-out year for Subculture. With a new album which is hopefully to be released by year end (with one song featuring Mira from the band Tilu), and packed gigs schedule, there is no turning back for the band. Subculture are here to stay! Latest releases (2011) • Dilemma – first Malay single • Ticket to the Moon – single • Bunyi Gitar – Tribute to P.Ramlee : Satu Indiepretasi – a project under Astro • BanyakBunyik - a compilation album featuring Subculture, Bad Tomato, Saturnine, Donatello and The Rhaman - Released under Rockamato Music, distributed by Life. • Menari di Angkasa (featuring Mira Tilu) Latest Line-up Azreen – vocals/rhythm guitar Izmir – bass guitar Fao – lead guitar Meor – drums Manager/Bookings/Press Contact Jaferi Achip – 0162225450 / subculturemalaysia@gmail.com Previous Endorsements Converse Malaysia – 2002-2003 Air Asia (DRB Hicom) – 1997-1998 Untuk show/gigs/pertunjukan pentas, sila hubungi:1.
