About Steve Vai
Steven Siro Vai (born 6th June, 1960 in Carle Place, New York) is a Grammy Award winning guitarist, composer and record producer. When growing up, the young Vai became interested in rock giants such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper (Glen Buxton) and Jimmy Page leading him to take up the guitar. Prior to attending Berklee College of Music, Steve frequently jammed with his teacher Joe Satriani and played in numerous local bands. He has acknowledged the influence of many guitarists, including Jeff Beck, fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth and, of course, Zappa. Steve's career was launched by his fascination with Zappa's music. A persistent rumour at Berklee tells how Steve would skip classes, spending time in the school's library transcribing Zappa's works by ear. Steve mailed transcriptions of Zappa's guitar solos to him, and after meeting Vai for the first time Zappa was so impressed with the abilities of the young musician, he hired him to transcribe his seemingly endless array of experimental symphonic rock. In these formative stages of his career, Vai's talent was showcased on such songs as "Moggio" and "Stevie's Spanking". While employed by Zappa, Vai would at times tour with Zappa's band and engage in a friendly competition with the audience, wherein audience members could bring in musical scores and see if Vai could sight-read them on the spot; Steve Vai is also known to have perfect pitch. Zappa referred to Steve as his "little Italian virtuoso"; he was listed in liner notes as "stunt guitarist". Steve's transcription skills can be seen in 'The Frank Zappa Guitar Book', a collection of transcribed solos released in 1983. After leaving Zappa in 1982 he moved to California where he recorded his first album "Flex-Able" and performed in a couple of bands. In 1984 he replaced Yngwie Malmsteen as lead guitarist in Alcatrazz with whom he recorded the album "Disturbing the Peace". Later in 1985 Vai joined former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth's newly assembled group (which also featured acclaimed bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette) to record the multi-platinum albums "Eat'em And Smile" and "Skyscraper". These albums, along with their accompanying videos and arena tours, significantly enhanced Vai's reputation and popularity. At the time, Roth engaged in a war of words with the members of Van Halen; many commentators favorably compared Vai's guitar-playing to Eddie Van Halen's. Following 1988's popular Skyscraper Tour, Vai left David Lee Roth's band. In 1989 Vai stepped into guitarist Adrian Vandenberg's shoes to record with British rock-group Whitesnake after Vandenberg injured his wrist shortly before recording was due to begin for the album "Slip of the Tongue".

Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, and Yngwie Malmsteen playing together on one stage. At one point Bettencourt, Wylde, and Malmsteen were playing and as soon as Vai came in they blew out the sound system. Everything had to be rebooted and rest. That’s how you know you were at a kickass show!!

Vai...excellent as always...one of the great players and showmen. Seeing him play Neoclassical for the first time since...well, since he played Ralph Macchio's parts in Crossroads...Steve ripped the audience a new one playing "Black Star" with Yngwie. Two former Alcatrazz guitar players in a friendly duel. So cool.

Steve, Joe, Eric, the guests, and the bands were totally on fire. Perhaps, one of the most incredible guitar shows out there. This was my third time seeing Joe live, and fourth -- Steve. Big fan! Enjoy hearing them every time, hope to see them again soon.

One of the absolute best shows I have ever been to in my life. Steve performed amazingly, he was kind, and he was humble. It was my first time seeing him live, as well as my dad's. I will never forget this day, thank you Steve Vai!

Sold out night! Masterful performance by Mr Vai and band! a tad disappointed he didn't bring out the Hydra, but I guess given the difficult touring conditions he described it's really hard to drag that massive thing across Europe, still, I'm happy to have experienced this

Steve is a master and hearing him in another diverse musical setting is just as good as it always is with him, and it was a very intimate venue where you could sit really close to him, which was awesome. We thought the show was great!!!

It was a great show and Steve allways give his best for his audience even for a small venue like the one in Ottawa. Having the chance and the honor of having a great virtuose like mister Vai is greatly appreciate by the fans. Thank you

The venue was great.. nice and small...we had 3rd row seats.. the treble was way too high and loud.. it was ear piercing.... leaning on the stage sound was better tab where we were sitting.. but Vai still kicked ass ..

Steve and his band sounded great, well rehearsed. HOB is a great venue, PA system sounded great, not too loud. All the band members could be heard. There's not a bad seat in the house.
