After seeing an early Sex Pistols gig at The 100 Club in 1976, songwriter Tom Robinson left the acoustiic harmony trio Café Society and the original Tom Robinson Band (TRB) with rock guitarist Danny Kustow, drummer Dolphin Taylor and keyboardist Mark Ambler. The group were early supporters of Rock Against Racism and enjoyed Top 5 success in 19777 with their debut single for EMI: 2-4-6-8 Motorway. Brief notoriety followed in 1978 with the LGBT anthem Glad To Be Gay, but by the time TRB's first album Power In The Darkness had entered the charts at No.4, internal arguments had resulted in Mark Ambler leaving the group. The band recorded one more album (TRB TWO, produced by Todd Trundgren) before breaking up acrimonously in the Summer of 1979. For more on the original 1970s band featuring Danny Kustow and Dolphin Taylor see this Granada TV documentary shot by Mick Gold in the Autumn of 1978, after Mark had left: TRB Part: 1 https://youtu.be/F3G61-3oRRA TRB Part 2: https://youtu.be/ryH9JGOBuA4 TRB Part 3: https://youtu.be/ePrvgKxTdWc TRB Part 4: https://youtu.be/JT8B86XtLuw Mark Ambler, Danny Kustow and Tom Robinson reunited as TRB for a year between 1989-90 before falling apart acrimoniously again for the last time. 28 years later, Tom Robinson and his current band performed Power In The Darkness in its entirety on tour, resulting in the album Live At The 100 Club. After the untimely death of Danny Kustow in 2019 the original TRB re-formed for a single memorial gig at The Scala Cinema, with Adam Phillips taking over on guitar. As of 2026 the Tom Robinson Band consist of Tom Robinson, Adam Phillips, Lee Forsyth Griffiths, Andy Treacey and Jim Simmons.
