Often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara,” VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré, who died in 2006. Vieux is known for dazzling crowds with his speed and dexterity on the guitar as well as his palpable charisma and luminous smile, both of which captivate audiences in spite of any language barriers (though Vieux does speak 8 languages).

Transcendental. Vieux’s guitar playing lives up to his legend. The bass and percussion were exceptional as well. Vieux is personable with the audience but doesn’t go on with banter; instead he and his band focus on transporting the audience to another continent and another plane.
Blue Strawberry St. Louis, MOAn intimate show where I doubt very few of the audience understood the language, but certainly could vibe with the music. Local opening artist Alex Siegel was invited to jam with the band for the last part of the show, which was fun and gracious.
