38 Special is an American rock band. Formed by Guitarist/Vocalist Don Barnes and vocalist Donnie Van Zant in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida, the band initially had a straight-ahead Southern rock sound, much like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band of Donnie's older brother Ronnie. By the early 1980s, the band began incorporating elements of blues-rock and arena rock into their sound, kicking off a string of successful albums and singles. Among 38 Special's best-known songs are "Caught Up in You" (1982) and "If I'd Been the One" (1983), both of which hit #1 on Billboard magazine's album rock chart, and "Second Chance" (1989), a #1 hit on Billboard's adult contemporary chart. Their other hit singles include "Hold On Loosely" (1981) and "Back Where You Belong" (1984). The band is comprised of guitarist/vocalist Don Barnes, guitarist Jerry Riggs, bassist Barry Dunaway, keyboardist Bobby Capps, and drummer Gary Moffatt.

I've seen 38 Special many, many times, but I must confess without a doubt this was the absolute BEST show I've ever seen. The weather was perfect...75, sunny, band was on fire & hubby & I had Front Row, Dead Center Seats...just an awesome night. If 38 Special comes anywhere near your town or you'll willing to traveling don't hesitate to see them. Don Barnes is Simply The Best!!!
Sweetland Amphitheatre LaGrange, GADon Barnes has it together! With the exception of the opening act, the show was wonderful - I thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember seeing the originals back in the day, and it was well worth a repeat. Jerry Riggs is an amazing guitarist- I appreciate him so much more. Highly recommend to any 38 Special fan!
Columbia County Performing Arts Center Evans, GAFirst time to I saw 38 Special was at the State fair of Texas right next to the stage. That was a great experience but oh so hot. This time was more relaxed and it was great to see the band from a little further back. More lights, great sound, so much energy from a band that is celebrating 50+ years.
The Pavilion At Toyota Music Factory Irving, TX38 Special at Luther Williams Field on 11/6/22 was EXCELLENT! Don Barnes can still sing like CRAZY! They did all of their oldies that everyone expected to hear, and some specially selected songs from other popular artists of the late 70’s & 80’s! I am 62, and am a 38 Special DIEHARD FAN FOR LIFE!!
Luther Williams Field Macon, GAShow was awesome. Seen the band 20 plus times. This concert was off the rails. Vocals and sound were on point. Sat closer to the front than usual. The band looked like they were having just as much fun as the audience. First time at this venue. Will definitely revisit for a different show in the near future.
