Français - English -------------- Afel est né d’une mère peule et d’un père sonrhaï, musicien. Ayant fait des études agricoles, il travaille à partir de 1978 dans le secteur du développement agricole. Mais sa carrière musicale débute en 1968; âgé de 13 ans, Afel Bocoum rejoint son oncle Ali Farka Touré, natif aussi de Niafounké, au sein du groupe Asco. S’il a quitté le groupe en 1978, il poursuit sa collaboration avec Ali Farka Touré pendant une trentaine d’année. Dans les années 1980, il fonde son groupe qu’il baptise “Alkibar”, qui signifie « Messager du grand fleuve » en langue sonrhaï. Afel joue de la guitare, compose et chante. Violon traditionnel et diurkel (instrument à une corde) ajoutent leurs sonorités singulières aux calebasses et percussions. L’atmosphère dépouillée ainsi tissée saisit lentement l’auditeur. Mariage forcé, hommage à des personnages de l’histoire locale, ode à la nature et chants de travail constituent les thèmes principaux des chansons. Délice de se laisser bercer par ces mélopées au glissement tranquille comme les pirogues qui avancent sans bruit sur le fleuve. Afel Bocoum chante principalement en sonrhaï, sa langue maternelle, mais aussi en Tamasheq, la langue des Touaregs et en Bambara. Ses chansons évoquent l’évolution de la société malienne avec la reconnaissance de la femme, les mariages forcés, le respect. En 1999, Afel produit un 1er album "ALKIBAR" (World Circuit/Night & Day) Son album a été enregistré là-bas, dans la foulée des séances d’Ali Farka Toure (Niafounké), ayant profité du studio d’enregistrement mobile apporté par le producteur d’Ali (Nick Gold). Afel a voulu faire un album dans l'esprit de celui qu'il appelle affectueusement " le Boss ". Avec la bénédiction de ce dernier, il a développé son répertoire dans un style doux et hypnotique qui lui est propre. Son jeu de njarka ou de njurkle (violon et guitare monocorde), ses solos de six cordes, ses mélodies de plus en plus dépouillées, son inspiration qui sent le terroir, sa conviction d'avoir donné le meilleur de lui-même sur chacune de ses compositions... Tous ces éléments se retrouvent sur ce premier album d'Afel Bocoum, qui s'était déjà illustré sur l'album culte du parrain (The Source). Son style s'accompagne d'une certaine rondeur sonore. Son jeu est plus serein, plus confiant et moins torturé par le sens de la vie. Ce doit être une affaire de génération. En 2002, Afel collabore avec le leader de Blur, Damon Albarn pour le très populaire album "Mali Music". Les dates qui ont survis ont été très bien accueilli, surtout le concert qui à eu lieu à Londres au Barbican en juin 2003. Damon a aussi fait une apparition en tant qu’invité au côté d’Afel sur la plus grande scène de Roskilde au Danemark devant 65.000 personnes. En 2004 & 2005, Afel & son groupe participent au projet “Desert Blues” en compagnie d’Habib Koité et des Tartit, les femmes touaregs de Tombouctou. Ce projet, au service de la diversité ethnique malienne, se veut un voyage au coeur du Sahara et du Sahel. Les 3 groupes ont mis leur talent en commun afin d’offrir un répertoire original pour à la fois se découvrir mutuellement et illustrer l’influence du Sahara sur les traditions musicales de chacun d’entre eux. Début 2006, Afel enregistre son 2e opus “Niger” au studio de son bassiste, Barou Diallo à Bamako, avec la complicité artistique de Daniel Boivin à la réalisation. Avec Niger, Afel nous emmene à nouveau sur les rives du grand fleuve, du côté de Niafounké, à l’une des sources du Blues... Les sujets des chansons sont, outre le fleuve et l’attachement à sa région, le respect de la Femme, les valeurs de la société malienne, la politique. Afel assume, dans cet opus, l’héritage musical de son oncle, Ali Farka Touré. Malgré son succès grandissant, Bocoum reste humble et garde une douce nature qui dirige modestement l’énergie de la reconnaissance vers l’importance du bien-être de son peuple et l’inspiration qu’il apporte à sa musique. Dans les mélodies dansantes du fleuve et le rythme palpitant du rude vent du désert, il n’y a aucun doute que l’héritage d’Ali Farka Touré est dans de bonnes mains. Avec une finesse remarquable et un talent sûr, Afel Bocoum a prouvé qu’il était une vrai "Messager du Grand Fleuve", et il est certain qu’il va contribuer pleinement à garder la musique malienne au devant de la scène internationale. ------- He was born to a Peule mother and a Sonrai father, also a musician. Having followed agricultural studies, Afel has worked since 1978 as a farmer and agricultural adviser. His musical career began in 1968: at 13 years of age, Afel Bocoum joined his uncle Ali Farka Toure, also from Niafunke, in his group Asco. Though he left the group in 1978, his collaboration with Ali Farka Toure has lasted some thirty years. In the 1980s, he founded his own group, which he named Alkibar, meaning "Messenger of the great river" in Sonrai. Afel plays the guitar, composes and sings. Traditional violin and the diurkel (a one-stringed instrument) add their individual voices to calabashes and percussion, creating an interwoven atmosphere of sounds that gently seizes the listener. The principal themes of his songs are forced marriage, homage to characters from local history, odes to nature and work songs. It’s delightful to allow yourself to be rocked by these monotonous chants, slipping like noiseless canoes down the river. Afel Bocoum sings mainly in Sonrai, his mother tongue, but also in Tamashek, the language of the Tuareg, and in Bambara. His songs evoke the evolution of Malian society, acknowledge women, forced marriage, and respect. In 1999, Afel produced his first album "ALKIBAR" (World Circuit/Night & Day). This album was recorded in Mali, during busy Ali Farka Toure (Niafunke) sessions. Afel benefited from the mobile recording studio provided by Ali’s producer (Nick Gold). Afel wanted to make an album in the spirit of the man he affectionately called "the Boss". With the blessing of the latter, he developed a repertoire and a soft and hypnotic style unique to him. His playing of the njarka or njurkle (one string fiddle and lute), his six chord solos, his increasingly simple melodies, his inspiration that evokes the earth, his conviction that he gives the best of himself to each of his compositions... all these elements are found on Afel’s first album, even if he had already revealed himself on the cult album of his mentor (The Source). His style is accompanied by a certain roundness of sound. His playing is more serene, more confident and less tortured by the meaning of life. Perhaps this is a generation difference. In 2002, Afel collaborated with the lead singer of Blur, Damon Albarn, on the extremely popular album "Mali Music". The gigs they played together were well received, especially the concert at the Barbican in London in June 2003. Damon also made a guest appearance beside Afel on a larger stage at Roskilde in Denmark in front of 65,000 people. During 2004 and 2005, Afel and his group took part in the project "Desert Blues" in the company of Habib Koite and Tartit, the Tuareg women of Timbuktu. This project, expressive of Malian ethnic diversity, travelled to the heart of the Sahara and to Sahel. The three groups joined talents to offer an original repertoire, at the same time a mutual discovery and illustrating the influence of the Sahara on the musical traditions of each of them. At the beginning of 2006, Afel recorded his second opus "Niger" in the studio of his bass player, Barou Diallo in Bamako, in collaboration with Daniel Boivin. With Niger, Afel takes us once again to the banks of the great river beside Niafunke, to one of the sources of the Blues... The theme of the songs is, in addition to the river and its surroundings, respect for women, the values of Malian society, and politics. In this opus, Afel truly assumes the musical heritage of his uncle, Ali Farka Toure. In spite of his growing success, Bocoum remains gentle and unassuming, modestly directing the energy this recognition brings him towards the welfare of his people and the inspiration they give to his music. In the dancing melodies of the river and the palpitating rhythm of the hard desert wind, there is no doubt that the heritage of Ali Farka Toure is in good hands.
