About Doug MacLeod
“Like all great blues men, MacLeod lives his music—the songs are one with his being.” — Blues Music Magazine
“One of the great blues artists…period!” — Jorma Kaukonen
“One of the last truly iconic blues songwriters of our time.” — Macallé Blues (Italy)
Doug MacLeod is an internationally acclaimed blues songwriter, guitarist, and storyteller, celebrated for his soulful vocals, masterful guitar work, wit, and unforgettable live performances. At the heart of his music is storytelling—bringing vivid, deeply human characters to life.
A multiple Blues Music Award winner, MacLeod received the 2024 Acoustic Album of the Year (Raw Blues 1) and the 2023 Acoustic Artist of the Year awards. In 2025, he earned additional Blues Music Award nominations for Acoustic Artist of the Year and Acoustic Album of the Year (Raw Blues 2), along with a Blues Blast Magazine nomination for Acoustic Guitarist of the Year.
His albums A Soul to Claim (produced by Jim Gaines) and Between Somewhere and Goodbye (produced by Andreas Werner) were named DownBeat Magazine Albums of the Year in 2022 and 2025.
MacLeod’s career spans more than 40 years and 29 albums. A former sideman to blues legends including George “Harmonica” Smith, Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulson, and Pee Wee Crayton, his songs have been recorded by artists such as Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker, and Eva Cassidy, and featured in film, television, and theater.
From 1999 to 2004, he hosted Nothin’ But the Blues on Los Angeles’ KLON-KKJZ, served as the voice of Continental Airlines’ Blues Showcase, and wrote the long-running column Doug’s Back Porch for Blues Revue Magazine. He is also featured in the documentary Resonate: A Guitar Story—The Making of National Guitars.
Overcoming childhood abuse and a crippling stutter, MacLeod found his voice through music—learning directly from the old masters and carrying their tradition forward with honesty and soul. As his mentor Ernest Banks taught him, “Never play a note you don’t believe, and never write or sing about what you don’t know.”
As Esther Crayton once told him, “You have a message—and you’ll send it mainly to the people who don’t go to church.” Amen.
