About Emery
Our trials and tribulations toughen us up and, ultimately, inform who we become. Emery proudly wear the wisdom from those scars in their songs. The Seattle band—Toby Morrell [vocals, guitar], Devin Shelton [vocals, bass], Josh Head [vocals, keys, synths], Matt Carter [guitar], Dave Powell [drums], Chris Keene [guitar] —teeter on an axis of unpredictably heavy soundscapes, off-kilter grooves, searing melodies, and fits of harmony. Now, the group open up and bleed like never before on their eighth full-length offering, Rub Some Dirt On It [Tooth & Nail]. “The album is based on personal and difficult real-life situations,” reveals Devin. “We wanted to focus on moments that were hard to navigate, but ultimately character-building experiences in our lives. When we would fall, scrape our knees, or get some other fairly insignificant injury, our dads would always say, ‘Rub some dirt on it’. In other words, you’re tougher than you think. Instead of crying or dwelling on it, get up and keep going. Don’t let the pain define you. Instead, learn from it and become better.”

I went to see my favorite band, He Is Legend. I haven’t seen Emery in about 9 years. I was really into them in college. In fact, they were my favorite band at the time. So I got to see my current favorite band open up for my former favorite band. Pretty cool. What was also cool was seeing all the kids at the show into the same band I was into at their age. And despite the gray hair, they put on just as great of a show as I’ve ever seen! This may have renewed my love of Emery.

Good Terms was f*cking awesome! The second band, Have Mercy? Their instrumentals were fine, but man, I could NOT hear the lead singer’s vocals whenever he yelled AWAY from the mic, so a huge disappointment. Wish someone would’ve said something to him after the first song lol But Emery, EMERY!? THEY. F*CKING. KILLED. IT!!!! Exactly as I would’ve heard from the album as I had first heard it back in 2013 via Spotify lol Basically, excellent live! And the rest of the venue was actually pretty decent, not too crowded, wonderful atmosphere upstairs and down, and wonderful staff

I enjoyed the concert as a whole. I didn’t know the first three bands, but I liked the second band that played. Emery did an awesome job presenting their acclaimed album, The Question. They took command of the stage from the very beginning and played a few extra of their hits. Incredible energy from those guys. The venue was small and intimate which was cool, but it got pretty hot and humid around the middle of the sets in there.

Wonderful to see such a supportive, packed venue of fans actually giving their full attention to the show and singing along to songs this many years later, and in the age of distraction via electronic devices. A beautiful night with fabulous bands. It was also great to finally see As Cities Burn live.

Emery never fails to deliver a great show, no matter the size of the venue. They brought the nostalgia and the new songs killed, too. When the guys came out to finish Say This Sooner with Aaron, literally got chills. So sick. Definitely will be seeing them again next time they're in SC.
