About Mica Millar
Mica Millar is a British soul singer, songwriter and producer whose music blends timeless elements of soul, gospel and jazz with a modern sensibility. Her powerful, emotive vocals and richly textured productions have positioned her as one of the UK’s most compelling contemporary soul artists.
Millar’s breakthrough came with the release of her debut album Heaven Knows in 2022 on her own label, Golden Hour Music. The record was mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios and mixed by multi-platinum engineer Brian Malouf—known for his work on Michael Jackson’s Bad and collaborations with Stevie Wonder. Malouf described Millar as “every engineer’s dream,” praising her clarity of vision and comparing her production approach on the single “Flashlights” to Quincy Jones.
Heaven Knows also featured contributions from an ensemble of world-class musicians, including bassist Jerry Barnes (Whitney Houston, Chic), pianist Bobby Sparks (Snarky Puppy, Kirk Franklin), bassist and engineer Vince Chiarato (Black Pumas, Jalen N’gonda), bassist Brandon Rose (Marcus Miller), and long-time Prince collaborators Ricky Peterson and David Z. Rivkin. Released to wide acclaim, the album landed Millar on the cover of Blues & Soul Magazine, earned a 10/10 review declaring “a star with intense emotional sincerity is born,” and drew five-star reviews from the Daily Express and Daily Mirror, who praised her voice and described her originals as “timeless and euphoric.” Jazz FM named Heaven Knows their “Album of the Week,” with Head of Music Christian Bragg affirming that “the future of British soul music is in very safe hands.”
Following the album’s release, Millar won the Jazz FM Award for Soul Act of the Year (2022) and performed a sold-out launch at Manchester’s Albert Hall. She went on to tour internationally, including a special performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra arranged by Guy Barker at the televised Jazz Voice gala on BBC Four. In 2023, she returned with a sold-out headline show at Union Chapel as part of the London Jazz Festival’s opening weekend. She has also supported Stevie Wonder at BST Hyde Park, Lionel Richie at Blenheim Palace, Gregory Porter at the Royal Albert Hall, and toured as a special guest with Gladys Knight on her farewell tour.
Mica’s music has received widespread radio support, with champions including Trevor Nelson (BBC Radio 2), Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music) and Victoria Jane (BBC Radio 1), as well as features such as Tom Robinson’s BBC Introducing Mixtape and live sessions on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and Woman’s Hour. She has also appeared across international radio and TV in Europe, including WDR Germany, further amplifying her reach. In recognition of her growing influence, Millar became a member of The Recording Academy in 2023.
Mica Millar was born in Manchester into a musical family. Her grandfather was a comedian and saxophonist who toured with Dusty Springfield, and her father, Kim Turner, a session drummer who toured with Manchester soul group Sweet Sensation. Growing up, Mica was immersed in a creative environment from an early age. Surrounded by music at home, she absorbed influences from classic Motown and gospel to modern R&B and jazz. She cites Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Etta James and The Supremes among her inspirations.
Before releasing her debut, Millar spent several years developing as a songwriter. This independence carried through into her debut project, where she not only wrote but also produced the entirety of Heaven Knows. Her creative approach—blending spiritual themes with soulful storytelling—reflects both her personal journey and the broader traditions of soul music.
Resilient and visionary, Millar has carved out her own path in the contemporary music landscape. With her soaring vocals, meticulous self-production and collaborations with world-class musicians, she continues to affirm her place as a rising force in British soul.
