About MANE

In a time when the entire world is more starved of human connectivity than maybe anytime in history, Adelaide artist MANE has penned a perfect, booming, beautiful anthem that celebrates the people that mean the most to us and the love that those relationships represent in her majestic new single, ‘My People.’ ‘My People’ is MANE’s first release since signing with indie stalwart label Dew Process and Universal Music Australia, and is a powerful opening statement in this new chapter of her extremely promising career. Much like her previous singles ‘What If The Love Does,’ ‘Save Yourself’ and the breakout hit ‘Chasing Butterflies’ before it, ‘My People’ features lush, baroque pop production, MANE’s soaring vocals and dark, furious energy that serves to only intensify the lyrics she sings. Indeed, as the chorus rolls out, the repetition of the words “My people!” almost serve as a call to arms to all of us trapped and separated by circumstance, to remember that although we’re forced apart in order to protect each other, love and the human spirit will be the things that that will keep out lives together in the end. Speaking about the song, MANE says, “‘My People’ is a celebration of everyone I hold close to me. It’s for my family, my friends – my entire support network. I hope that it encapsulates the gratitude I have towards everyone who has helped me through one of the most difficult times of my life. I hope others can feel and apply it to their own lives and the people in it as well.” Co-written with Mario Spate (Tkay Maidza, Stellie) and her primary collaborator Benny Tamblyn- Morrow, ‘My People’ was produced by John Castle (Cub Sport, Hatchie, Vance Joy) and is lifted from her forthcoming debut EP, poised for release later in 2020. “John was really fun to work with, he has a similar self-deprecating sense of humour, which made for good banter during the recording process. I felt really apart of the production and recording of the EP which is obviously really important as an artist, particularly when it’s your first body of work that you’ve been working hard towards.” The release of ‘My People’ has been supported with a wonderfully touching video directed by Joshua Tate (Sycco ‘Peacemaker’ and Asha Jefferies ‘Christmas’), that features old home footage of MANE growing up with her family, intercut with images of the friends that now make up her chosen family. It’s a poignant, heart-warming montage that elevates the song’s sentimental undertones. “I had the pleasure of working with Joshua Tate who sprinkled the video with a lot of a love and care,” says MANE. “It’s a small glimpse of all the important people in my life and some of the memories that come with that. I hope it makes people smile and reflect similarly.” Self-taught and inspired by the likes of Florence and the Machine, Hayley Williams, St Vincent, Lorde, Kimbra and Billie Eilish, … year old MANE (real name Paige Court) has spent the last few years transforming the music she makes from a pastime that brought herself pleasure, into a career that brings happiness to others. “I didn’t actually start using it as a creative platform myself until I was 16 when I started teaching myself guitar. It wasn’t until after high school that I really started perusing it as a career while I was studying media arts at university. Creating music makes me feel good, I love doing it, I love performing and I love being able to connect with people. The way music has always helped me combat my own challenges, I hope something of mine can do the same for others.” Having found national support via triple j radio and Spotify, as well as performing at festivals like Groovin’ The Moo and Spin Off alongside the likes of The Wombats, Meg Mac and Jungle Giants, MANE’s reputation continues to grow as one of the most exciting new talents in Australian music. Listen to ‘My People’ now and let it envelop you with the love and human connection it celebrates so beautifully, and understand why she’s the next big thing.
