About Night in Gales
THE PAST
After NIGHT IN GALES’ debut EP “Sylphlike” had hit the scene like a bomb in 1995 (up till now this release
remains with 7000 copies one of the best selling demos ever!), the first album “Towards The Twilight” was
released in 1997 under the wings of Nuclear Blast Records and the band toured with bands such as of In
Flames, Hypocrisy, Children Of Bodom, Sinister and Death, before releasing their second album
“Thunderbeast”. Further touring with acts like Dismember or again Children Of Bodom followed, as well as
appearances at festivals like Wacken Open Air or Summer Breeze Open Air.
While the releases this far presented the band with a clearly melo-death rocking groove, their third album
“Nailwork“ in 2000 showcased a rather morbid and more progressive side to things and Night In Gales not
only toured Europe with Old Man´s Child and Krisiun but also visited Japan together with Defleshed and long
time underground mates in Dew-Scented. The band’s upcoming “Necrodynamic“ release in 2001 saw them
switching to Massacre Records and also to a more varied and melodic stylistic approach, which after some
line up changes also lead to the band taking a break in order to musically re-orientate.
In 2011 NIGHT IN GALES returned to work with a brandnew album entitled "Five Scars" , showcasing a
matured and re-defined band, fresh and quality driven as ever before. "Five Scars" reached soudcheck
position #4 in German Metal Hammer Magazine and the band presented the new album a.o. at Summer
Breeze Open Air, Rock Harz Open Air, Rage Against Racism Open Air and Metal Splash Open Air in 2012.
Singer Björn Gooßes left the band after their Romania mini-tour in december 2012 to focus new projects.
Not knowing who will replace his position in the near future at this time, the band started working
immedialty on new more heavy material for album number six.
A NEW BEGINNING..
Finally In 2016, the band officially declared the return of former singer Christian Müller (1995 - 1996) and to
complete the recordings for the new album until summer 2017. The same year the band signed a worldwide
deal with Germany´s Apostasy Records. The new album entitled "The Last Sunsets" shows Night In Gales
returning to their early trademarks – furious melodic twin guitar riffing, driven by technical death metal
drumming, topped by a manic frustrated voice that sounds like someone is crucified upside down.
The album was mixed and mastered by living Death Metal legend Dan Swanö. The cover artwork and
illustration was done by romanian artist and longtime friend Costin Chioreanu. The album marked NIGHT IN
GALES´ comeback and led to top rankings in the national and international press as well. Besides playing the
summer open shows like Summer Breeze, Wacken, Dong Open Air and Rage Against Racism the band
performed for the first time in their carreer in Portugal, as part of the famous HARDMETAL FEST in
Mangualde.
In 2020, the follow up for "The Last Sunsets", entitled "Dawnlight Garden" was released and entered the
Official German Album Charts on position #64. The album followed musically and lyrically the path they took
with "The Last Sunsets". A Spilt 12" vinyl release with brothers in arms NYKTOPHOBIA followed shortly.
With their 2023 released 8th album "The Black Stream", NIGHT IN GALES returned out of a sudden after a
longer Corona-break and proved once more their status as one of the most relevant active true melodic
death metal bands around. "The Black Stream" reached top 5 positions in the german printmedia and a
strong #77 in the Official german Album Charts.
Only one year after "The Black Stream", the new and 9th album “Shadowreaper” was suprisingly announced
and the first single Spirals was released shortly after the official presale start in october 2024.
The Shadowreaper symbolizes the final stage of the finiteness of all existence: it shreds the lost souls -
aimlessly caught up in “The Black Stream” – so that nothing remains. He is also the incarnation of our
nightmares: a stalking horror made of shadows and burnt remains, longing for us all in the final hour.
Musically speaking, “Shadowreaper” is the next logical step after “The Black Stream” and kicks right in with
‘Into The Evergrey’ which opens with tasteful acoustic guitars that lead into a driving monster of a song. The
following ‘The Horrors Of Endlessness’ feels like a relentless warning against the idea of eternity. While
NIGHT IN GALES keep the overall speed quite high, they are also able to take the foot off the gas pedal to
allow mellow moments e.g. in ‘The Nihilist Delta’ to shine through all ongoing darkness. While ‘Spirals’
creates an irresistible groove, it’s ‘Sculptures And Defleshed’ that bundles all the band’s strengths in perfect
manner. The closing ‘Walk Of Infinity’ leaves the listener behind in complete darkness, with no light in sight.
And yet a few things are different with “Shadowreaper”. After they did four albums in a row with Dan Swanö,
this time the production has been entrusted to Fredrik Nordström, the man who created the great formative
classics of the genre in his infamous Studio Fredman in the Nineties: “Slaughter Of The Soul” (AT THE GATES),
“The Jester Race”, “Whoracle” (IN FLAMES) and of course “The Gallery” (DARK TRANQUILLITY). The end
result sounds extremely brute and unpolished by NIGHT IN GALES standards and delivers the much-coveted
'live feeling'. It's almost as if you open the door to the rehearsal room or concert hall and expose yourself
directly to the action and the huge wall of sound.
The creation of the cover artwork for “Shadowreaper” was put into the hands of Italian artist Paolo Girardi,
who has made a name himself in the international extreme metal scene with his work for INCANTATION,
POWER TRIP, CRYPTOPSY and THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, among many others.
“Shadowreaper”received top ratings in the national and international metal press and was listed as “Album
Of The Month” in german Rock Hard Magazine Nov/Dec 2024!
"Shadowreaper" was relased 6th dec. by Apostasy Records
