“If it takes effort, it’s not worth doing” is the motto of progressive metal quintet, Outrun the Sunlight. As contrarian to the status quo as that statement can seem for a group of guys that never seem to stop working on music, it’s really all about the energetics. The group has spent over a decade crafting music that has been rooted in metal, but has spanned far beyond. Formed in 2011 by guitarist, Austin Peters, and former guitarist, Cody McCarty, the two set a goal to write music they wanted to hear that they hadn’t heard before. Their influence from late 2000’s post-hardcore and metal combined with their love of post-rock music bridged a gap between genres that left a mark on their listeners. Now four albums later, the band has not stopped searching for the sounds they want to hear and has committed even deeper to letting the effort go. The line up is now compromised of Austin, Phil Kalas (bass), Luke Angle (drums), Konstantine “Ken” Stebliy (guitar) and Kyle Kunkler (synths). Their latest single, HEATHAZE (out October 29, 2024), pulls together the strengths of all five members in a way they had never done before, and the new music that continues to fuel the band only brings more of that to the table. Outrun the Sunlight seems to have a voice that is always evolving and meets little resistance. The change is always welcome.
