About Phil Wickham
“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” No one knows who actually said it. This witty proclamation has been attributed to actors, authors, comedians, jazz musicians and yes, an architect. Regardless of who deserves credit, it makes sense and with that sentiment in mind I apologize for what you are about to read and ask you to skip to the part where you actually listen to the record. If you are like me, you will feel more like dancing than writing. Mesmerizing. Atmospheric. Captivating. Stunning. Soaring. Lavish. Poetic. Phil Wickham’s music has been called every flowery adjective in the thesaurus and some that may have even been made up. And while they are often accurate descriptors they are at the same time distracting. When hearing these buzz words it’s too easy to lump an artist into a meaningless equation consisting of two musical references, a vague genre title and a classic predecessor. Welcome to missing the point. The point is that Wickham is at his core a humble and sincere artist who writes songs and worships God using the medium of music. It is with that brush that he paints images of a loving and creative God across the canvases of listeners’ hearts and minds. Although the evidence of this gift was apparent on Wickham’s previous release as well as his self released independent record, it has never been clearer and more developed than on the twelve tracks off his sophomore Simple Records album Cannons. When naming the album Wickham was trying to find a metaphor for the brilliance and magnitude of creation. He needed a word that has not been overused and therefore gives listeners pause and compels them to consider the wonder of the world around them. It’s falling from the clouds, A strange and lovely sound I hear it in the thunder and rain, It’s ringing in the skies Like cannons in the night, The music of the universe plays “If people just took the time to look at the trees outside, the rain that’s falling, these bodies that are walking around… life is not just evidence that God exists, but more like the world acting as worship leader, inspiring us, but much louder than any concert you could ever imagine,” Wickham states. “Ultimately, I hope that by listening to these songs people will find the same inspiration to look outside of themselves and their circumstance to the world around them and truly worship God.” For Wickham the desire he has for his albums and live show is always to lead people into worship. On Cannons he accomplishes this with a marked sonic shift and an added sense of urgency. Album opener “Must I Wait,” is a clear example of both with its driving tempo and use of layered synthesizers in place of the lush string arrangements of his self-titled debut. “I think this last year and a half on the road has taught me a lot about who I want to be as an artist. And more than anything I really thought about the live show - there were moments touring where I would say to myself I wish I had this kind of song to play right now. So with Cannons I set out to work all of that experience into the record.” “True Love” is one of those songs that Wickham wishes that he had with him over the past few years. The song is a classically bold lyrical challenge in the vein of Keith Green and others from the Jesus Movement era. The lyric offers an invitation to listeners to listen to the story of the Gospel and in the end a plea and a challenge. Come close listen to the story about a love more faithful than the morning… --- Search your hearts you know you can’t deny it Lose your life just so you can find it… “I don’t ever want to leave the stage without giving people something to chew on, something to respond to. The most important question is ‘what are you going to do with Jesus?’” Ask Wickham for the story behind Cannons and he’ll balk and say their really isn’t one story. He’s right and modest, there isn’t one – there are twelve. Twelve stories and one theme: open your eyes and look up. Phil Wickham’s songs connect. He asks the right questions and he gives voice and words to our response. The songs speak to the heart of our experience, our relationship with God – and with that said, I’m finished dancing about architecture.

It was the best show I have seen, very powerful and spiritual and a great way to worship God!! Phil really know how to put on a great show and knows how to pump people up to worship God!!. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and can't wait to see the show in person March 31st in Sacramento. Love Phil and his songs and concerts that get me through my deep struggles. Phil Wickham is the best at what he does because he loves God and knows how to show it through his songs!!

It was one of the best Christian concerts I’ve ever been to. Every song was delivered with passion and energy. I was brought to tears as I sang lyrics about God’s love and strength and how His love can conquer all. That gave me hope in a very dark time of my life. I’m so grateful my brother texted me last minute with an extra ticket. God was definitely at work on getting me to this event. Thank you, Phil Wickham and your band. Praise God for the work you do. The concert was amazing! Phil Wickham is my all time favorite Christian artist and I was so excited to be able to see him live in concert! Phil and Brandon Lake sang a lot of their songs together and did such a great job - they sing so well together! I praise God that I got the opportunity to spend such a great evening worshiping Jesus along with other believers! If you get a chance to go see them in concert, GO, you will not be disappointed!

My daughter and I traveled from St. George Utah to be at Gracefest and it was amazing. What a privilege it is to come together as Christians and freely worship our glorious God in such a beautiful outdoor amphitheater. Loudly and proudly singing His praises with these incredible artists. This was our second time this year traveling to California to see Phil Wickham! Can’t wait to see him in Henderson NV at the BEHOLD concert for another beautiful night worshiping our Lord Jesus!

This performance was Wonderful! And the venue (Red Rocks) was amazing! I liked all of the acts including; Shane & Shane, Jon Reddick, and Jenn and Brian Johnson! They were worthy to see in concert on their own! Then Phil Wickham and Brandon Lake joined for lots of songs together which was a treat! Lots of energy in both of these men. And the weather happened to be just right, with the moon shining bright in the mostly clear sky! Perfect time!!

AMAZING!!!! One word to sum up the night. What an excellent concert. Brandon and Phil compliment each other so well. Add in some KB and it becomes an unforgettable night. Thanks to last night, I now know what heaven is going to sound like... 11,000 people singing acapello was so emotional. I got chill bumps each time and still today just thinking about it. What an amazing night worshipping and praising our Lord and Savior. Everyone needs to experience this concert.

Show was great, but had difficulty getting into the concert. Missed the first half hour. After we clicked on link ticket said "You're in", but we couldn't get into the concert. We clicked on the ticket multiple times, but nothing seemed to work. I contacted customer service and they said just keep clicking on the ticket all over the place. I did that and eventually got in, but it shouldn't be that hard!

This concert was nothing short of brilliant! It was emotionally charged, passionate, full of life and love for our Lord. Phil’s music has helped me through some rough times, most recently the death of my husband. Last night was my first chance to see him live and I had tears running down my face all night. Josh Baldwin and Naomi Raine were outstanding as well. Catch this tour if you can. You will not be disappointed!❤️💜🙏🏼

This concert was so amazing last night. These three guys are so talented and honestly just made my holiday season 10 times better. I took my son and it was his first concert. He had the best time ever! He was so happy to see Phil Wickham live and not on YouTube. My Heart melted when he told me that. I can't wait for next year! But next year I am taking my whole family.
