We started as a three piece Folk Punk band in 2015 after Ryan Bigelow (vocals, guitar, trumpet) and Emma Lambiase (vocals, bass) began jamming on music Ryan had written and instantly clicked. After nearly a year of searching, we found our drummer, Jordan Lindley. We recorded a demo album, toured through Tennessee, Texas and Louisiana and took influence from modern Indie Rock acts like Courtney Barnett and Dirty Projectors. In Autumn, 2016 we properly recorded our first studio album, So Not a Sonata, with Sarah Bernstein at Brown Owl Studios in Nashville. It was mastered by Tzvi Sherman. We added two members, Julia Meredith (sax, flute, clarinet) and Marc Greenspon (keys, mandolin, violin), who contributed to the jazzier sound we were trying to attain, and then began to proclaim ourselves Folk Jazz. The lyrics drew from storytelling singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan while the music was derived from Bossa Nova chord changes and Post Rock bands like Stereolab. Today, we are working on our second studio release. It incorporates more acoustic elements and is heavily influenced by Tropicalia, a Brazilian, politically-driven music movement from the late 60's and early 70's. We are also heavily taking influence from Freak Folk bands like Animal Collective. We added Blake to play conga for our new sound and he will be releasing our second studio album through his tape label, Banana Tapes. Thomas Luminoso, from the Nashville band, Sunny Side is engineering it. When we write, Ryan comes with the music and lyrics while Emma and Blake lay into a groove under it and carry the music. Julia plays countermelody to the vocals and solos on lead flute and clarinet. We especially like to experiment with time, harmony and noise and are incorporating more avant-garde elements to our songs and performances. The only way to truly experience it is to see us live!
