About Unwritten Law
Unwritten Law may be one of two bands;
The first being a garage/punk band from california in the 1960's
The second being an American pop punk band that started in 1990.
They broke out in 1999 for their best known single "Cailin," which appeared in the movie Coyote Ugly. "Seein' Red" followed in 2002, and the single "Save Me" was released in December 2004, appearing on their album Here's to the Mourning.
Coming out of San Diego, California, Unwritten Law has a power punk sound all of its own. The band features two guitar players, including Scott Russo, their chief songwriter and lead vocalist. Unwritten Law has stated that they play most of their songs acoustically before recording in the studio. This unorthodox approach towards punk music is perhaps one of their most unusual attributes.
The group grew up in the same rock scene that produced longtime friends Blink 182 (the song "Josie" off of Blink's "Dude Ranch" album includes the lyrics "And my girlfriend likes U.L..."). The original members of Unwritten Law watched themselves transform from a thrash punk garage band into international stars. Unwritten Law's Elva album was the #1 selling rock album in Australia in 2003 and they have toured extensively there, as well as touring all over the U.S. since the mid-1990's.
In 2005 drummer Wade Youman, the only original member of the band, was kicked out for ongoing disputes with Russo over a woman and money. Considered an underrated drummer by some, Youman faded out of sight and made way for a tandem of drummers for the band's new album, "Here's to the Mourning" released February 1, 2005. Tony Palermo of "Pulley" took over for Youman in 2005 and is currently the drummer of the band.
2005 brought more line-up changes for UL. While touring in support of "Here's To The Mourning", guitarist Rob Brewer was 'fired' from the group following an on-stage incident with Russo. They have since decided to continue on as a four-piece, having Russo both sing and play guitar on most songs during their live performances.
