JANIVA MAGNESS Truth In The Room With the release of Truth in the Room, her first-ever live record, Janiva Magness has delivered the document her fans have long been waiting for — proof, captured on record, of what she has always done live: make a room stop, listen, and feel. Recorded in front of an intimate gathering of 150 invited friends and music industry guests by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, it is a milestone that crowns more than three decades of one of the most honest and enduring careers in American blues. Few voices in Contemporary Blues carry the lived weight and luminous authenticity of Janiva Magness. Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has established herself as one of the most compelling and emotionally honest singers in American roots music — a soul-blues artist whose power on stage and in the studio has earned her the devotion of fans worldwide, the respect of her peers, and some of the genre's highest honors. Hers is not a story of overnight success or industry machinery. It is something rarer and more durable: the story of an artist who found her truth and never let go of it. Magness was born in Detroit and grew up amid considerable hardship, a childhood marked by instability and loss that would ultimately deepen her capacity to connect with the emotional core of blues music. She discovered early that singing was not merely something she could do — it was something she had to do. Music became her anchor, her language, and eventually her livelihood. By the time she came of age as a performer, she had already lived enough to mean every word she sang. Her recording career launched independently in the early 1990s, beginning with the debut live album More Than Live, released in 1991 on her own Taiga Music label. Recorded with renowned engineer Ed Cherney and the Record Plant on their mobile trucks, the cassette sold out almost immediately and went out of print — an early indicator of the grassroots fervor she would generate for decades to come. More Than Live would later be offered as part of a 2014 Limited Edition Box Set, which accompanied yet another independent release, Original, and serving as a testament to her long history of doing things on her own terms. Magness has received multiple Blues Music Awards, the premier honors in the genre presented annually by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN — peer-voted recognitions that represent a direct expression of esteem from the musicians, producers, and industry professionals and fans who know the music best. She has also earned a Grammy® nomination in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category for Love Wins Again, placing her in rarified company among the genre's most celebrated artists of the modern era. Among her most prized honors is the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award, one of the most prestigious individual distinctions in the world of Blues. The deciding factor was the involvement of Bob Clearmountain as engineer and mixer. One of the most celebrated figures in recorded music, Clearmountain has shaped the sound of some of the most notable albums in rock and pop history. His ability to translate the energy of a live moment into a recording that breathes and moves is without parallel. For Magness, having Clearmountain at the helm meant the live album she had always envisioned could finally exist.
