The Sheila Divine are a powerhouse Boston-based indie/post‑punk trio formed in 1997 by singer‑guitarist Aaron Perrino, bassist Jim Gilbert, and drummer Shawn Sears—all college friends from SUNY Oneonta, with Perrino and Sears first connecting in a music theory class. Their name, inspired both by the Australian slang “sheila” (meaning “effeminate man” or “wimp”) and a friend Sheila Devine, captures their tongue-in-cheek spirit. Starting on CherryDisc Records, the band won Boston’s 1999 WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble and earned a deal with Roadrunner, releasing their acclaimed debut New Parade in 1999, which featured college‑radio staples like “Hum” and “Like a Criminal”. Their sound—intense loud/soft dynamics, soaring vocals, and a touch of early ’80s post‑punk/shoegaze—garnered a passionate fan base in “the three Bs”: Boston, Buffalo, Belgium. After expanding their lineup and releasing Where Have All My Countrymen Gone (2001) and the Secret Society EP (2002), the band briefly disbanded following a grueling world tour . Perrino pursued other projects (e.g. Dear Leader), but Sheila Divine reunited in 2010 and have since released The Things That Once Were (2012), The Morbs (2015), Beginning of the End Is Where We’ll Start Again (2019), and I Am the Darkness. We Are the Light (2024) Today, only Aaron Perrino remains from the original lineup, with the band continuing under his leadership and embracing both classic and newer material. They’ve gained renewed energy and critical acclaim with sweeping European tours and dynamic live shows reminiscent of their late‑’90s glory. The Sheila Divine: a true indie cult legend—raw, emotional, and endlessly evolving, with roots in Boston but a reach that spans oceans.
